Be Thankful You Are A Democrat, Senator Reid
This article first appeared on Jan 10, 2010.
When you are a Republican or Conservative, any statement that can be interpreted as insensitive (or be taken out of context and misrepresented as such – see Michael Moore) can be a career-ender. Luckily for Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), so long as you are a liberal and a Democrat, you need only apologize and all is forgiven. Why – they probably bring Leslie Neilsen out of retirement from Police Squad to stand in front of the cameras declaring "Move Along – Nothing To See Here – Please Disperse – Nothing To See Here".
You can read a link to the Reuters story here.
According to a new book, Game Change, Senator Reid is quoted as referring to then-Candidate Obama as a "light-skinned black man with no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one".
Honestly, how fast would a non-Democratic, non-liberal officeholder been ran out of Washington and had their political future declared over were they to have made as racially-charged and insulting comments? Even if they offered an apology (which Senator Reid did) and if their apology had been publicly accepted by the President (which it was), is there anyone who would hold to an illusion that there would not be howls and screams from the racial activists on the left delivered moment-by-moment via their willing accomplices in the main-scream media?
For a little historical reference, former Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott (R-MS) was shouted from his post by demands for censure and retirement for positive comments that he made about retiring Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC) after his many years in the U.S. Senate. His comments that led to his forced step-down were a suggestion that he felt Thurmond would have been a better choice for President (during a previous campaign) than the winning candidate.
Lucky for Senator Reid, it appears that the Presidential office affords one are more forgiving nature. While current President Obama is quick to forgive a fellow Liberal Democrat who actually makes a truly racially insulting remark that was directly demeaning toward him, he was obviously not so forgiving while an Illinois State Senator in the Lott case in which the comments were simply politically-supportive to a fellow Senate colleague upon his retirement. On the flip side, it is equally plausible that this is yet another example of the blatant hypocrisy, double-standards, and intellectual dishonesty so prevalent in today’s Left Wing.
